TOYS AND GAMES: Dr. Pepper and a Diablo Sandwich
Sheriff Buford T. Justice stole the show in the classic Smokey and the Bandit. My favorite line came when Jackie Gleason’s character barked out: “Let me have a Dr. Peppah and a Diablo Sandwich, and make it fast, I’m in a goddamned hurry!”
I first saw that movie about a hundred years ago and ever since then I’d been curious about the sandwich that sounded so good on the silver screen. That is until Thursday. Though I had not been in “hot pursuit” from Texarkana to Atlanta chasing a truckload of Coors, I felt the time had finally come to experience said culinary delight.
Diablo 2Since I’ve never seen a Diablo Sandwich featured on any restaurant menu, I went to the Internet for the skinny. Turns out it’s a little bit like a taco. You brown hamburger meat and combine that with taco seasoning, diced tomato and corn. Before you put those ingredients on a toasted bun — I chose a ciabatta roll — you lather sour cream on the bun and top with lettuce.
Though it’s recommended to serve this concoction with fries, I chose Lays Potato Chips, and, of course, a Dr. Pepper (note: a tall boy).
Once I had assembled my lunch, I sprawled out in front of the TV to watch the PGA Championship while I devoured the sandwich that proved to be even tastier than what I had expected.
I only wish Gleason had been there to join me.
