TOYS AND GAMES: Marriott Points, etc.

I recently posed the following question to a fellow baseball scribe — and Marriott whore: “Do you think Marriott would double our points if we converted to Mormon?”

His response: “I could learn to pull for BYU.”

Saw John Hart walking around at the Winter Meetings, which triggered a memory from when he served as the Indians general manager. In the midst of the last baseball strike, we were at the same bar–shocker, right?–and he squeezed the biceps of my right arm before asking me if I wanted to be the backup catcher for his replacement squad.

Former Marshall coach Bobby Pruett once told me about the good and bad of having athletic players. On the plus side, athletic players get to the football a lot faster to make the plays only comic book heroes can make. On the down side, having athletic players forced him to run less complicated defenses, which he explained as follows: “While they can get to the play faster, if they don’t know where they’re going, they’re a lot farther away.”

Happy birthday to my beautiful bride, Patti.
