TOYS AND GAMES: “Scoring the basketball”…Ahhhhhhhh!!!!
March Madness approaches and those who cover the games and analyze what’s going on are already delivering one of my least favorite comments in sports when they talk about “scoring the basketball.”
One expert noted: “They’re a much better team when they score the basketball.”
Two questions, the first being obvious: Aren’t all teams better when they are scoring?
Next: What else are they going to score? A football?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Drives me crazy.
Oscar Robertson sounded like Oscar the Grouch when trashing reigning MVP Steph Curry. The NBA Hall of Fame guard believes there is no defense going on in the league these days, or at least not the likes of when he played.
Hard to say about the defense, but lets let’s look at some numbers. Robertson’s free throw percentage was .838 and he shot .485 percent from the field. Curry shoots .446 from outside the three-point line and .901 from the free-throw line. Wonder how the “Big O” would have shot threes these days.
Bottom line: When you’re a legend, you never sound good talking about how much better it was in the good old days.
Finally, looking a the way things are developing for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, I think there are a lot of teams that can win the thing. I’ve never won a pool, but one qualifier for picking my champion is whether a the team I picked had won six or seven games in a row at some point of the season. Being able to string together wins in the tournament is kind of important.
My late grandmother would be a lock for winning a pool given this year’s climate and employing her approach to winning at Jai alai. One night she came home with a purse full of money after a night at the old Fronton. Her simple approach? She bet on the teams wearing purple.
